Eric Schmaltz is a Canadian poet, scholar, and editor. He is the author of one book of poetry, Surfaces (2018).

Eric holds a Ph.D. from the Department of English at York University where he specialized in Canadian Literature, with an emphasis on experimental and avant-garde poetics. From 2018-2019, he was a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow in the English Department at the University of Pennsylvania. His critical writings have been published or are forthcoming in academic journals, including English Studies in Canada, Jacket2, Canadian PoetryCanadian Literature, and Forum as well as edited collection, All the Feels / Tous les sens: Affect and Writing in Canada / Affect et écriture au Canada (Eds. Marie Carrière, Ursula Mathis-Moser, and Kit Dobson).

Eric’s academic work on experimental poetries extends to his creative practice. He is the author of a poetry book, Surfaces (Invisible 2018), and a number of shorter creative works. He was Guest Editor for the inaugural issue of Knife Fork Book’s literary magazine Not Your Best, which highlighted work by contemporary visual poets and text-artists (including Rachel Blau DuPlessis, derek beaulieu, Gary Barwin, Hiromi Suzuki, and more). His creative work has appeared in periodicals such as The Berkeley Poetry Review, Jacket2, Arc Poetry, Vallum, The Capilano Review, and Lemon Hound and has been featured at festivals and in exhibitions at the Institute for Experimental Art (Athens, Greece), Kislak Center (Philadelphia), VerseFest (Ottawa), Critical Media Lab (Kitchener) The Secret Handshake Gallery (Toronto), Havana Gallery (Vancouver), Niagara Artists Centre (St. Catharines), and Rodman Hall (St. Catharines).
