Devotion No. 1 – Julia Edith Rigby

This is the first in a new series of poetry-infused films that explore devotion, hope, fear, and entanglements among people, landscapes, and more-than-human beings. The artists hope that the poetry film teeters on the edge of sensory overload and evokes feelings of warmth, kinship, unease, and wonder for the world we share with millions of species. The film and original score are by Julia Edith Rigby, who created the score by experimenting with string harmonics on her viola. Over the last few years, she has gathered footage of whale sharks, silk moths, night herons, shark embryos, and more. The original poem and audio recording are by her sister, Allie Rigby.

Julia Edith Rigby is an experimental sound artist, composer, and sculptor who thinks about entanglements among humans and more-than-humans, phenomena and sound. Her projects explore collaboration and interdependence with animals and environments, imagining futurities which complexify our relationships to sensory worlds. She is online @juliaedithrigby on Instagram. Allie Rigby has roots in the chaparral and deserts of Southern California. She is the author of Moonscape for a Child (Bored Wolves, 2024) and the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, a William Dickey Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize nomination, and a Best of the Net nomination. She is @allie.j.rigby on Instagram.
